CDU

Introduction

The Central Decontamination Unit (CDU) at Naas General Hospital plays a crucial role in supporting the Operating Theatres, Endoscopy Theatre, Emergency Department, ICU, and Outpatient Departments. We also extend our services to the Theatres and Outpatient Departments of Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise. While patients may not be aware of our work, the hospital's ability to perform surgeries and medical procedures relies heavily on our services.

Our Work

Our primary responsibility is to ensure the meticulous decontamination—including cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization—of Reusable Invasive Medical Devices (RIMDs) and Endoscopes. This process is conducted in strict accordance with HSE Standards and Recommended Practices for Central Decontamination Units, ensuring that all procedures align with current legal requirements and professional best practices.

A Quality Management Process is in place to guarantee full compliance with these standards, ensuring that all RIMDs are safe for both staff handling and patient use. The expertise and training of our CDU staff are critical to preventing healthcare-associated infections, making our role essential to patient safety and the overall function of the hospital.
