Palliative Care

What is Palliative Care?

Palliative care is an approach to care. It focusses on reducing and relieving symptoms of advanced, progressive illnesses. Patients may be referred to the Specialist Palliative Care Team in Naas General Hospital if they have complex symptoms. These symptoms include:

  • Pain
  • Nausea
  • Shortness of breath
  • Complex psychological or social needs related to their condition

We work alongside other healthcare professionals who may also be providing care. We can also provide psychological support for patients, their loved ones or families.

For patients who are inpatients in the hospital, a referral to the Palliative Care Team can be made by hospital consultants and doctors. For outpatient care referrals can be sent to the outpatient department by consultants, hospital doctors, general practitioners and by other palliative care colleagues.

Referrals may be made to provide advice and specialist support for:

  • Physical symptom control
  • Psychological or social distress
  • End of life care
  • Future care planning

Patients may also be seen as outpatients, as clinically needed, on the Oncology/Haematology Day ward at Naas General Hospital.

The team works closely with St. Brigid’s Hospice regarding continuity of inpatient care and community services.
