Day Ward and Pre-Assessment Unit

The Day Ward has 11 beds for patients with scheduled day procedures.

Overview

Patients in the Day Ward are discharged on the same day following their treatment.

The pre-assessment office is located on the corridor adjacent to this unit.

All day surgery cases are pre-assessed prior to day of admission. The planned day procedures, ranging from minor to intermediate, may involve sedation, local anaesthetic, or general anaesthetic. Patients requiring general anaesthetic undergo their procedure in the operating theatre but receive pre- and post-operative care in the Day Ward.

Day Ward activity includes day surgery, endoscopic procedures, blood transfusions, iron infusions, venesections, and various diagnostic blood tests. Additionally, the Infusion Suite, equipped with four reclining armchairs, caters to patients requiring more complex infusions and operates twice a week.

The Day Ward is an extremely busy department in the Hospital, with approximately 100 endoscopic procedures, 60 venesections, over 100 general surgeries, 60 infusions, and blood tests performed each month.

The staff have the privilege of meeting a diverse range of individuals every day, and the primary goal of the Day Ward is to provide patient-centred, holistic nursing care.
