The day ward is a 13 unit ward. The pre-assessment office and waiting area is located on the corridor adjacent. All day cases are pre-assessed prior to day of admission.
The ward consists of 6 beds, 2 treatment chairs and 5 trolleys.
Our aim is to meet the needs of our day patients to the best of our ability.
The ward admits patients who are booked for a planned day procedure. They are discharged on the same day and may require a bed or trolley for a period prior to discharge. These procedures may be either minor or intermediate, requiring sedation, local anaesthetic or general anaesthetic. Patients requiring general anaesthetic have their procedure done in theatre but are cared for pre and post operatively in the day ward.
Day ward activity includes day surgery, endoscopy procedures, blood transfusions and venesection.
The ward offers placements for student nurses from both Trinity College Dublin and Moore Abbey. We also afford valuable experience to those interested in the medical and nursing professions by providing placement programmes for transition year students from local schools and for pre-nursing students from the Carlow Institute of Technology.
Ward staff are active participants in hospital committees and regularly update their knowledge and practice through study days.
